- Surface preparation: Ensure the subfloor is completely dry before installation. Any moisture trapped beneath the tiles can expand when frozen, causing tiles to lift.
- Drainage planning: Design the installation with proper slopes (1/4″ per foot minimum) to prevent water pooling that could freeze and damage the tiles.
- Winterization: Before the first freeze, drain all water features completely. Cover the tiles with breathable tarps to prevent ice buildup. Avoid using plastic sheeting that can trap moisture.
- Spring inspection: After winter, inspect the installation for any damage caused by ice. Repair any lifted tiles or damaged areas before opening for the season.
